She was 14.5 and, though I’m still not completely sure of what the specific complications were, it was time.

As you can imagine, this was a difficult day for all of us. I worry about my parents and brother, their first Spring without her. And Cain? Poor Cain had to start his life as a street cat before we rescued him only to loose the only nightly snuggle companion he’s known. And I think I have problems…

And so it goes…

Ruby,

Remember when I was scrawny and ornery and I was determined to ride you like a horse? To attach super soakers to you and other contraptions that only my young mind could dream up? You were okay with it and that’s why I knew we were good. You played fetch and you ran and you wagged and you shook. And you put up with more children pulling on you and calling you “boobie” than most of your contemporaries.

You were a good dog. And, as William said, “things will just not be normal at Grandma and Grandpa’s house.”

"I have no context for it, but it looked like he was doing a rhetorical analysis of how gender..."

““I have no context for it, but it looked like he was doing a rhetorical analysis of how gender relationships were playing out over the course of the novel,” Schwartzburg told me. “He appeared to really engage with her and looked carefully at how she structured her narrative.
Remember that time I was talking to that one boy on the phone, you know that one, and I had been really upset- and not even your funny banana phone was cheering me up- and you took out a notepad and started writing silly things on it like “remember easy breezy, it’s 2010!” and stuff like that that only we would get a kick out of because we are weird, and it became painful for me to keep my laughter in, which was a serious problem since I was on the phone with “the boy” having a serious conversation. Then I forgot why I was upset in the first place. We carried on our night drinking wine and talking about how silly our lives are…how one day we’d like to be the type of people that know that they should “waterproof” expensive fur rugs because they aren’t worth anything if they aren’t surrounded by friends spilling bottles of red wine on them, and that so and so is turning into such a such and such and isn’t that just so cool/sad/weird/funny/interesting. God I get a kick out of you.

You laugh at my jokes when they aren’t funny, you make fun of boys with me, you tell me when I’m acting like a child and need to grow up, you take theme parties seriously, and, in true Simko style, you won’t even care that this Birthday wish is a day late.

I knew when I met you an adventure was about to begin….

Just got a box full of candy buttons, zebra stripe gum, pop rocks, fun dip and other shenanigans in the mail for my birthday (this Sunday). The following homemade card, written in a penmanship which upon seeing, you’d be instantly jealous of, was attached:

“Dear Rachelle,

Life is sweet, isn’t it? It was particularly sweet when we lived on Sierra Drive, and on a warm spring day, we’d get on our bikes - yours with the pink wheels, mine with the banana seat, the spokes click-clacking with their snap-on beads - and pedal our skinny little legs off to Ben Franklin, our long hair blowing behind us, our bangs flattened against the wind. Once we made it up the big hill by MeadowLane, we knew we were golden.

The aisle of sugar was minutes away.

We’d load our plastic bowls with these penny candies, stuff our mouths with our favorites, and pedal home. Our destination found; our simple journey made.

If I could give you anything for your birthday, it’d be one more trip to BF when we were still young enough to be excited by the prospect of Laffy Taffys.

Since I can’t give you that, here’s the next best thing. I filled a bowl for you of all our favorites (plus some toys that reminded me of you). Happy Birthday - take time to savor the sweetness of childhood once in awhile. You will always be, for me, the best part of it. Love you - Renee”

Renee, I don’t know how in the world you found some of this stuff (like the “tube of balloons”-wasn’t that banned?- and the “grow your own”), but I assure you, it made my day…and my birthday.
